General FAQ

This FAQ is here to make skincare feel easier, not more overwhelming. We’ve answered the most common questions about our products, ingredients, routines, and philosophy so you can feel confident in how and why everything works together.

Damaged skin barrier or dehydration?

Dehydration means skin is short on water. A disrupted skin barrier means its outer protective layer is not working as well as usual, which can make it harder to hold on to moisture. The two can happen together, and you cannot reliably tell the cause from appearance alone.

Tightness, roughness and fine lines that look more noticeable can accompany dehydration. Stinging with products you normally tolerate, burning, redness or flaking can suggest irritation, but these signs can have other causes too. Oily skin can also feel dehydrated. Treat these as reasons to simplify your routine, not a checklist for diagnosing “barrier damage.”

What does a simple, supportive routine look like?

Keep the basics gentle: cleanse without scrubbing, use a moisturizer you already tolerate, and apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher during the day. Avoid hot water, harsh cleansing and adding several new products at once.

If your skin tolerates it, The Quench — Hydrating Serum is an optional hydration step after cleansing and before moisturizer. It contains glycerin, betaine and hyaluronic acid and is designed to help dry or tight-feeling skin feel more comfortable. It is not a treatment for a damaged barrier, and a serum is not essential. Skip it if it stings or makes discomfort worse.

When should I pause exfoliating acids and other actives?

Pause exfoliating acids such as AHAs and BHAs, scrubs and non-prescription retinoids if your skin is burning, stinging, visibly irritated or unusually sensitive. Do not try to exfoliate away irritation-related flakes or push through burning as a sign that a product is working. If a prescribed treatment is involved, ask your prescriber how to adjust it.

Wait until your skin feels comfortable and your basic routine no longer stings before considering reintroduction. There is no universal number of days. Add one product at a time, follow its directions and start less frequently than before. Stop again if discomfort returns.

When does vitamin C fit back in?

Vitamin C is optional, not a barrier-repair essential. While skin is irritated, leave brightening actives out and focus on the basics. Once your skin feels settled, you can consider The Healthy Glow — Vitamin C Serum for brighter-looking, more even-looking skin. It uses ascorbyl glucoside, a vitamin C derivative, but that does not guarantee tolerance. Try a small area first, introduce it separately from other actives and stop if irritation develops. It does not replace sunscreen.

When should I seek professional advice?

Speak with a dermatologist or another qualified healthcare professional if irritation is persistent, worsening, recurrent or difficult to explain, or if you have a skin condition or use prescription treatments. Seek prompt medical advice for significant pain, swelling, blistering, weeping or signs of infection. Trouble breathing or sudden swelling of the lips, tongue or throat needs emergency care.

This is general skincare education, not a diagnosis or a substitute for individual medical advice.

How long does barrier repair take?

There is no reliable countdown. Mild tightness may start to ease within days after simplifying a routine, while irritation can take longer, sometimes weeks. The cause, severity and continued exposure to irritating products all affect the timing. Feeling more hydrated does not prove that your barrier has fully recovered, and no cosmetic can promise a fixed repair date.

Look for a steady return to comfort rather than chasing a deadline: less stinging, less flaking and better tolerance of your basic routine. If symptoms persist, worsen or keep returning, seek professional advice rather than continuing to experiment.

What makes Root + Renew different?

Root + Renew is built around one core belief: skincare should support your skin, not stress it out. We focus on barrier-first formulas, intentional actives, and products that fit real routines. No gimmicks. No overcomplication. Just effective, well-balanced skincare that works with your skin over time.

Are your products suitable for sensitive skin?

Many of our products are designed with sensitive skin in mind, especially our cleansers, hydrators, and moisturizers. That said, everyone’s skin is different. If you are highly reactive or managing a skin condition, we recommend patch testing and introducing new products slowly, especially actives.

What does “barrier-first” skincare mean?

Barrier-first means prioritizing hydration, balance, and skin health before pushing aggressive treatments. A strong barrier helps skin tolerate actives better, reduces sensitivity, and supports long-term results. Our routines are designed to protect the barrier while still delivering visible improvements.

Are your products organic or natural?

We use a blend of organic ingredients and carefully selected actives backed by science. All of our ingredients are 100% natural. While not every ingredient is organic, all formulas are thoughtfully developed to be effective, gentle, and purposeful. We prioritize performance, safety, and skin compatibility over trends.

Are your products vegan and cruelty-free?

Yes. All Root + Renew products are vegan and cruelty-free.

Can I use multiple Root + Renew products together?

Yes. Our products are designed to work together as a system. You can build a simple routine or layer intentionally depending on your skin’s needs. When using actives, we recommend spacing them out across different days rather than layering everything at once.

How do I know which products are right for me?

Each product page includes guidance on who it’s for, how to use it, and where it fits in a routine. If you’re unsure, start with hydration and barrier-supporting products first, then introduce actives slowly. You can also reach out to our team for personalized guidance.

Do I Need To Use Every Product For Results?

Not at all. Root + Renew is designed to be flexible. You can start with one or two products and build slowly based on your skin’s needs. Consistency matters more than complexity.

Are Your Products Safe To Use Together With Other Brands?

Yes. Our formulas are designed to layer easily and play well with other skincare. If you’re using strong actives from multiple brands, we recommend alternating nights to avoid overloading the skin.

Do your products contain fragrance?

Some products contain naturally derived fragrance from essential oils, while others are fragrance-free. We always aim to keep fragrance subtle and skin-considered. If you are fragrance-sensitive, check the ingredient list or reach out to us before purchasing.

How should I store my skincare products?

Store products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Certain formulas, like vitamin C serums, may benefit from refrigeration to maintain freshness and stability. Always follow storage guidance listed on individual product pages.

How long does it take to see results?

Some benefits, like hydration and comfort, can be felt quickly. Visible changes such as improved tone, texture, or firmness typically appear with consistent use over several weeks. Skincare is cumulative. Consistency matters more than speed.
